PUBLICATIONS(Ranked by impact factor of the journal)An Integrated Stress Response via PKR Suppresses HER2+ Cancers and Improves Trastuzumab Therapy Researchers showed an anti-tumor function of the protein kinase PKR and its substrate eIF2α in a mouse HER2+ breast cancer model. [Nat Commun] Full Article Treatment with auranofin, an FDA‐approved thioredoxin reductase inhibitor caused specific cell death and impaired the growth of triple‐negative breast cancer cells grown as spheroids. [Int J Cancer] Abstract Parthenolide Covalently Targets and Inhibits Focal Adhesion Kinase in Breast Cancer Cells Scientists studied the parthenolide mechanism of action using activity-based protein profiling-based chemoproteomic platforms to map additional covalent targets engaged by parthenolide in human breast cancer cells. [Cell Chem Biol] Abstract | Graphical Abstract Hypoxia‐Induced Secretion Stimulates Breast Cancer Stem Cell Regulatory Signaling Pathways The authors describe the mechanism by which hypoxia‐induced secretion influences cancer stem cell (CSC) spreading. Conditioned media from estrogen receptor‐α positive hypoxic breast cancer cell cultures increased the fraction of CSCs compared to normal growth conditions, as determined using sets of CSC assays and model systems. [Mol Oncol] Abstract | Full Article A 3D Bioprinter Platform for Mechanistic Analysis of Tumoroids and Chimeric Mammary Organoids Investigators recently described a low-cost bioprinting platform designed to be accessible for basic cell biology laboratories. Here they report the use of this system for the study of tumorigenesis and microenvironmental redirection of breast cancer cells. [Sci Rep] Full Article Scientists investigated the role of vitamin D3 (vitD3) in mammary epithelial morphogenesis using two 3D culture models. VitD3 interfered with estrogen’s actions on T47D human breast cancer cells in 3D differently at different doses, and recapitulated what was observed in vivo. [Sci Rep] Full Article miR‐141‐3p was downregulated in drug‐resistant cell lines. Cyclin‐dependent kinase 8 (CDK8) was proved to be a target gene of miR‐141‐3p. [J Cell Biochem] Abstract Researchers showed that resistin increased the migration of MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells and induced the formation of cellular protrusions through reorganization of F-actin filaments. [Cytokine] Abstract Silibinin-Induced Apoptosis of Breast Cancer Cells Involves Mitochondrial Impairment The authors report that silibinin decreased the mitochondrial mass in terms of MitoTracker Green staining in breast cancer cells. Silibinin induced morphological changes of mitochondria from oval to truncated or fragmented shapes accordingly. REVIEWSSeveral factors expressed by the stroma of breast carcinomas are associated with the development of metastasis, such as matrix metalloproteases, their tissular inhibitors or some of their regulators like integrins, cytokines or toll-like receptors. [Cancers] Abstract | Download Full Article Plasticity and Potency of Mammary Stem Cell Subsets during Mammary Gland Development The authors focus on current research on the biology of normal mammary stem cells with an emphasis on properties of cellular plasticity, self-renewal and quiescence, as well as the role of the microenvironment in regulating these processes. POLICY NEWSSenate Panel Delays Good-Government Bill, Scolds HHS for ‘Moving the Goal Posts’ A Senate panel delayed action on a bipartisan bill to improve government transparency among advisory bodies in deference to concerns from the National Institutes of Health that the legislation would seriously disrupt the agency’s ability to review research proposals. [ScienceInsider] Editorial To Meet the ‘Plan S’ Open-Access Mandate, Journals Mull Setting Papers Free at Publication Plan S, the funder-backed scheme to require free online access to scientific literature, aims to shake up the subscription journals that have long dominated scholarly publishing. Now, some publishers are considering an approach they hope will both comply with the plan and maintain their subscription income: allowing authors to post manuscripts in public archives as soon as their papers are published.
