TOP STORYScientists showed that intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) cross-communicate with epithelial cells (ECs) via the production of IL-13. Skin ECs were activated by IEL-derived IL-13, enabling a canonical EC stress response. [Nat Commun] Full Article | |

PUBLICATIONS(Ranked by impact factor of the journal)DERMAL STEM CELLS & TISSUE REGENERATIONIn transgenic mice, proline-rich Akt substrate of 40 kDa (PRAS40)T246A remained bound to raptor in keratinocytes even after treatment with TPA, consistent with reduced mTORC1 signaling and altered levels of cell cycle proteins. [J Invest Dermatol] Abstract The authors evaluated the biological significance of M-CSF on skin wound healing. In an in vivo mouse skin excisional wound model, they found that SSEA-positive stem cells were present in wounded but not normal skin. [Sci Rep] Full Article Scientists determined the expression of cathelicidin anti-microbial peptide (CAMP), vitamin D receptor, and the retinoid X receptor isoforms in human skin and gingival tissue biopsies and investigated the signaling pathways involved in 1,25D3-induced upregulation of CAMP. [Cell Tissue Res] Abstract The authors investigated the effects of granzyme B (GzmB) on keratinocyte cell migration using HaCaT cell line. Using electric cell-substrate impedance sensing and scratch assays, they demonstrated that GzmB inhibits keratinocyte migration by interfering with the EGFR pathway. [Biol Chem] Abstract Investigators found that plantamajoside attenuated ultraviolet B (UVB)-and-glycer-advanced glycation end products–induced matrix metalloprotease 1 (MMP-1) expression in HaCaT and HDF cells and proinflammatory cytokines expression by inhibiting the phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) activated by reactive oxygen species. [Photochem Photobiol] Abstract SKIN CANCERS & DISORDERSmiR-214 and miR-148b Targeting Inhibits Dissemination of Melanoma and Breast Cancer Depleting miR-214 or elevating miR-148b blocked the dissemination of melanoma or breast cancer cells, an effect that could be accentuated by dual alteration. Mechanistic investigations indicated that dual alteration suppressed passage of malignant cells through the blood vessel endothelium by reducing expression of the cell adhesion molecules ITGA5 and ALCAM. [Cancer Res] Abstract Inhibitions of mTORC1 and 4EBP-1 Are Key Events Orchestrated by Rottlerin in SK-Mel-28 Cell Killing Scientists searched for apoptotic, necrotic/necroptotic and autophagic traits in Rottlerin-exposed cells. Although SK-Mel-28 cells are both apoptosis and autophagy competent, Western blotting analysis, caspase activity assay, nuclear imaging and the effects of autophagy, apoptosis and necroptosis inhibitors indicated that Rottlerin cytotoxicity was due to none of the aforementioned death mechanisms. [Cancer Lett] Abstract Pentoxifylline Inhibits WNT Signaling in β-Cateninhigh Patient-Derived Melanoma Cell Populations Using patient-derived melanoma cell populations, scientists investigated the influence of pentoxifylline on melanoma cells with either high or low expression of β-catenin. [PLoS One] Full Article Researchers showed that the melanin contents, tyrosinase activity, and gene expression of tyrosinase and microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) were significantly increased by treatment with vasoactive intestinal peptide in B16F10 mouse melanoma cells and the stimulatory melanogenic effect was further examined in human epidermal melanocytes.
