Renal Cells from Spermatogonial Germline Stem Cells Protect against Kidney Injury Using a novel renal epithelial differentiation protocol, scientists obtained germline cell-derived pluripotent stem cell-derived tubular-like cells (GTCs) that were functional in vitro, as demonstrated through transepithelial electrical resistance analysis. In mice, GTCs injected after ischemic renal injury homed to the renal parenchyma, and GTC-treated mice showed reduced renal oxidative stress, tubular apoptosis, and cortical damage and upregulated tubular expression of the antioxidant enzyme hemeoxygenase-1. NIH Scrambles to Catch Up after U.S. Shutdown Grants staff members at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) who came back to work after the 16-day government shutdown ended will now need to catch up on a backlog of research proposals and canceled peer-review meetings. Exactly how all this will play out isn’t yet clear, and angst is rising in the blogosphere about how researchers seeking new funding for their projects will be affected.
